Lyrics from Jay-Z’s ‘Where I’m From’
“I’m from where the beef is inevitable, summertime’s unforgettable
Boosters in abundance, buy a half-price sweater new
Your word was everything, so everything you said you’d do
You did it, couldn’t talk about it if you ain’t live it
I’m from where n1gg@$ pull your card, and argue all day about
Who’s the best MCs, Biggie, Jay-Z or Nas?”
In this month’s article, blurb, I want to discuss who are the 3 wise men? El tridente! Who are the men and women that are going to lead us into the next generation of success for Ghana specifically, but Africa? A kin to some of the prominent musicians who have taken Africa by storm Tiwa Savage, Davido, Wiz Kid, Burna Boy.
For the continent of Africa. Yesteryear we had Didier Drogba, Samuel Etoo, Michael Essien, and a little after, but kind of part of the same generation, Yaya Toure. And today, we have some more outstanding candidates with Saido Mane, Salah, Mahrez, and Oshoala.
But following the U20 AFCON’s last month. It’s capped of what has been a successful 15 months in office for Kurt Okraku. And yes, he has to be a part of the conversation of prominent figures to lead Ghana. Just like Pape Diouf did Marseille. Inspiring change. Just like Samia Suluhu Hassan has in becoming Tanzania’s first woman president. Pape Diouf was Marseille’s Senegalese president, who oversaw the foundations of Marseille’s first league title triumph in 18 years. The emergence of Didier Drogba! Who will become one of the forefathers for the new generation. That said, Kurt Okraku has made encouraging and positive steps since his appointment in Nov/Dec 2019.
2020 was one of transition. Agree? An opportunity to reflect and reset. Football has new faces! Haaland and Mbappe. It’s a dawn of a new era for Kurt Okraku. And as far as ghana was concerned, despite transition, we saw some phenomenal football! Some of the highlights being –
*Jerome Boateng & Alphonso Davis’ all conquering Bayern Munich in Europe
*Brian Brobbey making his League and Champions League debut
*Eddie Nketiah’s fine form
*Jennifer Cudjoe’s move to Sky Blue FC
*Kudus Mohammed’s move and form for Ajax
*Yunus Musah’s debut and form for Valencia
*Kamaldeen phenomenal form for Nordsjaelland
*Partey’s form for Ateltico and move to Arsenal
*Depay’s form for Lyon, and re-emergence back to the big time
*Tariq Lamptey’s debut for Chelsea. Move to Brighton, and fine form
And 2021, the success of the Satellites in Mauritius. New stars were born! Daniel Barnieh, leading scorer for Ghana in the tournament.
In Kamaldeen some believe we have one the next break out stars. Kudus Mohammed’s move and early form for Ajax give us hope. In Thomas Partey, you have experience and the highest level. And in Jennifer Cudjoe you have poise and personality.
In the early naughties, and generations before us, your football did the talking. And that’s where your focus should be. Developing you craft. But in 2021, playing isn’t enough. Developing your brand is just as important. Who you are, how you influence, what you represent matters just as much.
Alberta Sackey, Mercy Tagoe, Abedi Pele, Tony Yeboah, Stephen Appiah, and Michael Essien to an extent didn’t have the attention of social media. But just like Batman needs Robin. Jay Z needed Nas. Messi needs Ronaldo. Haaland needs Mbappe. And Drogba needed Etoo.
At the beginning of this new decade. It may be too early to determine with such a young and new group. But with the 2022 AFCON and World Cup 12 to 18 months away. Who will be the face(s), and lead Ghana’s next generation?
